HALL OF FAME
History:
The present Hall of Fame concept was originated in 1988 by the USAMU International Rifle Section and was finalized in 1994 at the direction of USAMU Commander
Colonel Lory M. "Mac" Johnson. Presently there is a Hall of Fame for each Shooting Section, a Support Hall of Fame, and the main USAMU Hall of Fame.
In 2007 the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) Commander LTC Charles Connett signed a revised Hall of Fame (HOF) Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). He requested that the MMA post the SOP to the MMA web site in order to explain the selection process.
On December 5, 2022 LTC Casey Mills signed the most recent revision of the Hall
of Fame Standard Operation Procedure. The selection and induction of persons into the USAMU Hall of Fame, the Section Halls of Fame, and the Support Hall of Fame is controlled by the USAMU and not the MMA. The MMA has volunteered to perform administrative functions listed in the "Responsibilities" enclosure of the SOP.
This SOP outlines the criteria for being nominated and inducted into one of the Shooting Section Halls of Fame (International Rifle, International Pistol, Running Target, Shotgun, Action Shooting, Service Rifle and Service Pistol), the Support Section Hall of Fame, and the main Unit Hall of Fame.
There has been some confusion on how and who can be inducted into these halls. While no Hall of Fame SOP can cover all possible scenarios, this SOP does does allow for all individuals that have served their country and the USAMU in a truly exemplary manner to be considered.
A short summary follows:
USAMU Hall of Fame:
The purpose of the USAMU Hall of Fame is to recognize those individuals who served their country and the USAMU in a truly exemplary
manner. All individuals that are in a Shooting Section HOF or Support HOF and have been retired from their primary competitive sport for five years are considered for the ballot. Induction in the USAMU Hall of Fame is by vote of MMA members for three of the 25 candidates on the ballot.
The induction ceremonies have traditionally been conducted at major events such as reunions, ensuring the majority of individuals can attend and be recognized.
Support Hall of Fame:
The purpose of the Support Hall of Fame is to recognize exceptional contributions to the success of the USAMU mission by individuals in a
support role.
Individuals in this category include but are not limited to:
- Coaches
- Gunsmiths
- Command Group
- Logisticians
- Administrative Personnel
- Operations Personnel
- Instructors
Provide a photo and bio of the person you choose to nominate. Those documents will be sent out to the individuals currently enshrined in Support Hall of Fame for a vote. Please see the "Support Section" of the SOP for specifics.
Shooting Sections Halls of Fame:
The purpose of these was to recognize the exceptional accomplishments of male and female soldier/shooters in each shooting section.
For the most part, individuals earn points and once they earn 50 points are eligible for induction.
